President Trump started his 2017 term with little to no political experience. In the same year, he dismissed the first 100 days idea via a tweet calling it ridiculous. However, he later boasted about how much he had accomplished during this period. On January 20, 2025, he returned as an experienced president who had four years to prepare for a swift and busy beginning when voters were eager to see campaign promises unfold. The president did not disappoint.
President Trump had always emphasized how he would tackle immigration, which seems to be his priority among trade, taxes, foreign policy, and other issues he has strong positions on as he enters his first 100 days. Just a few hours after his inauguration, he said he was going to close the U.S. borders with Mexico and launch the largest deportation ever heard of in history. Just a few weeks into his term, President Trump had signed dozens of executive orders, most of which are facing challenges from individuals and the entire country.
Securing Our Borders
President Trump signed an executive order to build a physical wall and other barriers, monitored and supported by adequate personnel and technology, to prevent illegal entry into the United States. The order also aims to detain and remove aliens who enter and remain illegally, as they violate federal law, and to charge those who facilitate their unlawful presence in the country.
Remain in Mexico
While in office, former President Joe Biden’s CBP One entry program allowed thousands of migrants legal access into the U.S. by scheduling an appointment through an app. As soon as he took office, President Trump called for his administration to reinstate the Remain in Mexico policy (just as he had mentioned during his inauguration that he would end the catch and release practice). This policy stops non-Mexican migrants in Mexico from entering the U.S. and requires them to wait in Mexico for the resolution of their cases. Meanwhile, existing appointments were canceled, leaving migrants stunned.
Immigration
In a bid to successfully carry out deportation orders, agents across the federal government have been granted the same powers as immigration officers. On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, which marked President Trump’s first full day in office, federal officers stormed into sanctuary cities, arresting over 300 illegal migrant criminals. Churches, hospitals, and schools were among the targeted entities.
In line with deportation, President Trump launched military deportation flights last week as part of his national emergency declaration on immigration. So far, four planes full of migrants have landed in Guatemala, and Colombia has sent its own planes to transport their migrants from the U.S. after refusing to accept them from a military plane.
Guantanamo Bay
President Donald Trump announced that he has given orders instructing the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to begin preparations for a 30,000-migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay to detain the worst criminal illegal migrants threatening the American people. He stated that some of these criminals are so dangerous that the country cannot hold them, so sending them to Guantanamo will immediately double the country’s capacity, adding that Guantanamo Bay is a tough place to escape from.
Sent First Plane to Guantanamo
The first flight carrying high-threat migrants from Texas to Guantanamo Bay landed on Tuesday, February 4th, in the evening. This plane carried 10 migrants, who are suspected members of a Venezuelan gang.
Ending Citizenship Right By Birth
President Trump issued an executive order declaring that babies born to undocumented immigrants, or to parents who are in the U.S. legally but on temporary visas, will no longer be granted U.S. citizenship as has always been the case. This new policy applies to babies born after February 19th, 2025. Following this order, the federal government will not issue documents such as passports or Social Security cards to these babies.
President Donald J. Trump Imposes Tariffs on Imports from Canada, Mexico and China
President Trump holds Mexico, Canada, and China accountable for their promises to halt illegal immigration and stop the flow of poisonous fentanyl and other drugs into the U.S. President Trump is implementing a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% additional tariff on imports from China. Energy resources from Canada will face a lower 10% tariff until these crises are alleviated. President Trump later announced that he had put a pause on the tariffs initially declared on Mexico after a friendly conversation with the president of Mexico. She agreed to secure the U.S. borders and take measures against illegal drug exportation into the U.S. Similarly, he suspended the tariffs on Canada, stating that Canada had agreed to cooperate.
Immediate Assessment of Aviation Safety
On Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, a military helicopter carrying three U.S. military soldiers collided with a passenger jet from Wichita, Kansas, which had 64 people onboard (60 passengers and 4 crew members) near Washington, D.C. airport. Though the cause of the crash is still unclear and investigations are ongoing, flight tracking data suggests that the helicopter was flying above the permitted altitude just before the incident. There were no survivors, and the mission shifted from a rescue to a recovery effort. Following this incident, President Trump accused the Obama administration and blamed the Biden administration for implementing dangerous diversity, equity, and inclusion tactics, specifically recruiting individuals with severe intellectual disabilities. He then ordered an immediate return to merit-based recruitment, hiring, and promotion, emphasizing safety and ability as the paramount standards.
Planned to Put Thousands of USAID Staff on Leave
President Trump had made it clear during his campaign and on his inauguration day that he would put America first. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has existed since the early 1960s, administering humanitarian aid programs on behalf of the U.S., with about 10,000 employees in more than 60 countries worldwide. Trump posted on his Truth Social page on Friday that USAID’s spending IS TOTALLY UNEXPLAINABLE CLOSE IT DOWN! His administration added that USAID’s spending is wasteful and lacks accountability.
Addressing the Egregious Actions of the Republic of South Africa
President Trump stated that the South African government recently enacted a land expropriation act, enabling them to seize ethnic minority Afrikaners agricultural property without compensation. He added that South Africa has taken aggressive positions toward the United States and its allies, including accusing Israel, not Hamas, of genocide in the International Court of Justice, and reinvigorating its relations with Iran to develop commercial, military, and nuclear arrangements. Therefore, he ordered the admission and resettlement of Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination through the United States Refugee Admissions Program. He further ordered the United States Agency for International Development to halt foreign aid or assistance to South Africa to the maximum extent allowed by law.
Increased Access for Musk’s D.O.G.E.
Donald Trump has indicated that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is operating without guardrails after it gained access to Americans private information very easily and as it prepares to challenge the Pentagon. The president said he is pleased to announce that Elon Musk will be working in conjunction with American patriot Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Moving Forward
So far, President Trump’s first 100 days in office have been marked by bold actions and significant controversies, not only by the Democrats and Americans but around the world. Public opinion has labeled him as the Hitler of today and a dictator. Others have condemned his actions, saying he was elected president of the United States, not of the world. While he is focused on fulfilling key campaign promises such as tax reform, constitutional amendments, deregulation, and efforts to reshape immigration policy, most of these changes are facing legal challenges, political and public resistance, and debate. Whether his presidency is viewed as a success or a setback, it is clear that his approach has disrupted traditional political norms, presenting a combative style. As the administration moves forward, the lasting impact of these first 100 days will depend on how effectively Trump can navigate the complexities of his political agenda and reforms.
