Did Shane Tamura Really Shoot Himself in the Chest with a Rifle?

The tragic mass shooting that unfolded at 345 Park Avenue on July 28, 2025, left New York City reeling. Four innocent people lost their lives, and the alleged gunman, Shane Tamura, was found dead with what police say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. But as the dust settles, one question lingers: How did a man shoot himself in the chest with an AR-style rifle?

According to CBS News, Tamura was heavily armed and wearing body armor when he entered the building. After opening fire in the lobby and later on the 33rd floor, he reportedly turned the rifle on himself. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the wound was to the torso, a choice that’s prompted some to speculate whether it was a calculated move.

In his suicide note, Tamura blamed the NFL for his mental state, claiming he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and imploring scientists to study his brain. This could explain the chest wound—avoiding damage to the head—but it doesn’t answer the more difficult logistical question: Is it even physically plausible to shoot oneself in the chest with a long rifle while wearing body armor?

No autopsy report or forensic details have been released publicly. There’s no official explanation of the angle, distance, or method used to fire the weapon. And that lack of transparency has sparked quiet but growing doubt about whether the official version of events tells the whole story.

As Time Magazine pointed out, Tamura’s final act seemed carefully constructed to support his posthumous narrative. But in the absence of verifiable details—no autopsy, no ballistic report, no gun positioning evidence—one can’t help but wonder if there’s more to uncover.

In tragedies like these, what we don’t know is often as haunting as what we do. And sometimes, the silence around the facts says more than the story itself.

What do you think—are we being told everything, or is there something about this ending that doesn’t quite add up?
